Vedana Privacy Policy
Vedana is a personal mood-tracking app for iPhone and Apple Watch. This policy explains what data the app handles and how. In short: your data stays with you — on your device, and in your own iCloud if you are signed in. Vedana has no accounts, no servers of ours, no analytics, no advertising, and no third-party tracking SDKs. We never receive your entries.
Data we handle
All of the following is created by you and stored on your device (in the app's private, App Group–shared storage), and mirrored to your own iCloud if you are signed in — see iCloud sync. None of it is sent to us or to any third party.
- Mood entries — the emotion, category, intensity, and timestamp you record.
- Notes and photos — any free-text note or photo you attach to an entry. A note can be locked, which encrypts it on the device with AES-GCM using a key held in your Keychain.
- Location (optional) — if you choose to attach a location to an entry, its coordinates and place name are stored with that entry and shown on the in-app map. Location is used only for this purpose and is never sent to us.
- Heart rate (optional) — when you log a mood on Apple Watch with Health access granted, the heart rate at that moment may be attached to the entry.
- App Lock passcode (optional) — if you enable App Lock, your PIN is stored in the Keychain on that device only; it does not sync. Face ID / Touch ID is handled by the system and never exposed to the app.
- Preferences — settings such as language, theme, and selected icon pack.
iCloud sync
If you are signed in to iCloud, Vedana mirrors your entries to the private database of its iCloud container, so the same moods appear on your other devices. That storage is yours: it sits in your iCloud account under Apple's terms, and a private database is not readable by the developer. We have no access to it and no copy of it.
The key that unlocks a locked note is stored in your Keychain and syncs through iCloud Keychain, so a note you lock on one device stays readable on your others.
If you are not signed in to iCloud, or iCloud is unavailable, the app keeps everything locally and works the same. You can turn the sync off in Settings ▸ [your name] ▸ iCloud ▸ Apps Using iCloud.
Apple Health (HealthKit)
If you grant permission, Vedana can:
- Write a “State of Mind” sample to Apple Health that mirrors the mood you logged.
- Read your recent heart rate (on Apple Watch) to attach it to an entry.
Health data is stored and managed by Apple's Health app under your control. Vedana does not send Health data anywhere. Deleting a mood in Vedana also removes the State of Mind sample it created; other Health data is managed by you in the Health app. You can revoke Health access at any time in Settings ▸ Privacy & Security ▸ Health ▸ Vedana.
On-device intelligence
The weekly insight feature (on supported devices) uses Apple's on-device foundation models (Apple Intelligence). Your mood summaries are processed locally on your device and are not sent to Apple or to us.
Purchases
Optional icon packs are sold through Apple's In-App Purchase system. All payment processing is handled by Apple; Vedana never receives or stores your payment details. We only see whether a pack has been purchased, via Apple's StoreKit entitlements.
Your controls
- Export — You can export all your mood entries as a JSON file (Settings ▸ Data ▸ Export Data). The file is created on demand and shared only where you choose to send it. A locked note is exported as it is stored, which is unreadable ciphertext; unlock it first if you want it readable.
- Delete — You can permanently delete all mood entries from your device (Settings ▸ Data ▸ Delete All Data). This cannot be undone, and removes them from your iCloud copy as well.
- Uninstall — Removing the app deletes its local data from the device.
Data sharing and retention
We do not sell, share, or transmit your data, and we never receive it. Your entries are retained until you delete them or uninstall the app; deleting them also removes them from the iCloud copy described above. If you have iCloud device backup enabled, your on-device app data may additionally be included in your encrypted Apple backup, which is governed by Apple's privacy policy.
Children
Vedana is not directed to children under 13 and does not knowingly collect data from them.
Changes
We may update this policy as the app evolves. Material changes will be reflected here with a new effective date.
